Faces
of Outback Business
When you need a fast connection in the timeless world of Aboriginal Australia, what better than the Swiss precision of Didjworld internet access? With their shops in Alice Springs and Darwin, Urs Sigrist and Beatrice Dubach, originally from Switzerland, guarantee you a friendly welcome and an instant link to any part of the planet. Urs knows Australia well. For many years, he was flying to and from Bali, trading in clothes for a Swiss company. He earned so many frequent flyer points that he decided to fulfil his dream and go and see Australia, which was close by. “Australia had always been a magnet for me,” he said, “so I grabbed a ticket and flew to Darwin as a tourist.” It was love at first sight. Urs explored the Top End, finding himself drawn to Aboriginal culture. He began to play the didjeridoo. Soon, he was exporting didjeridoos to Switzerland. That was a decade ago. He was still not living permanently in Australia then. He needed to persuade Beatrice, a Swiss customs officer, to share his Australian dream. They travelled Down Under together and Beatrice said: “OK.” For the last four years, they have been developing their internet business together. They have two shops, one in the Springs Plaza, Alice Springs, and the other at 60, Smith Street in Darwin. They don’t serve coffee, just pure, fast electronic connection. Urs and Beatrice have the biggest computer monitors in town. The laid-back Aussie lifestyle is fantastic but for first-class computers, they reckoned only “Thin Clients” from Germany were good enough. They take you onto the net at a speed of 1.5 mbits. That’s the fastest connection currently available. The hardware may be super-efficient but Urs and Beatrice always have time for a friendly chat with their customers. Ask them for tips and advice about travelling around Australia. They know the country and apart from English and German, they also speak Swiss German. Med liebe Grüss! Urs ond Beatrice.
